Forget Me Not has been out for just over a week and sped up into the top fifty kindle books on Amazon. Thank you to everyone who has bought the book! Those early days after a new release are always nerve-wracking, so it’s a relief that readers seem to be enjoying it.

Last month, they featured an article I wrote and I’m copying it below:
Don’t Set It Here
Miranda Rijks
Sadly, we all know bad things happen to good people, and terrible things can occur in beautiful locations. But that’s real life. As I crime writer, I get to choose what happens where, and to whom – yet that has caused me a conundrum.
I write stand-alone psychological thrillers and have set most of them in West Sussex, near where we live. I don’t have any great emotional attachment to this location, however lovely it is. My heart has always belonged in the mountains. As a child, we were lucky enough to spend many holidays in the Swiss Alps, both in the summer and winter. There was a shoebox-sized chalet (probably a small garden shed) constructed of blackened wood with bright red shutters. I used to point at it and say, ‘That’s going to be my house when I grow up.’
The mountains are my happy place. Their majesty makes me feel humble and awe-inspired. I never tire of looking at the views, listening to the crickets and the cow bells, and breathing in that fresh air. Before having bone cancer, I used to love skiing (about the only sport I was any good at!) and ever since I started writing thrillers, I knew I wanted to set a book in my favourite place in the Alps. The problem is, all my books have a murder or two in them, and I really didn’t want to tarnish my dream location!
Forget Me Not is my sixteenth psychological thriller and I’ve taken the plunge, sending my English interior decorator key character to the canton of Valais in Switzerland. I’m lucky enough to spend a lot of time there these days (alas not in that little black chalet), so I’ve been able to draw upon some of the idiosyncrasies of the area. This includes the bisses – the network of irrigation channels that take water down the mountainsides, and the more unusual traditions such as the Inalpe Festival when cows are encouraged to fight.
I really wanted to do my bit for the local tourist board and promote the villages in which I’ve set my book. But the Swiss are very private people and after mooting the idea with some locals, they weren’t keen. Make the murderers come from Zermatt or Verbier they said, but we don’t want any nasty things happening here, even if they are imaginary! So I’ve kept my special place untarnished. The village names in Forget Me Not are invented. I just hope that when I next visit, my mind won’t be haunted by the final line in the blurb: Only one thing is certain – the mountains want to claim another body…

Finally, one of the reasons I haven’t been active over here on Substack or done much on social media is because I’ve been so busy writing books! Yes, there’s another psychological thriller coming out on 13th December. I’ll give you more information soon. In the meantime, I’m leaving hubby and dogs behind and I’m jetting off to stay with my cousin in South Africa…
Very best wishes and thanks for reading,
