My dad always said don’t work with friends or family. It was slightly ironic considering we spent many years working together in a family business, but I get that it can be problematic. But sometimes, needs must.
When I penned my first psychological thriller, I Want You Gone, I had planned on self-publishing. I had cajoled my husband into helping me with the marketing, although I was sensing some resistance! Rather than asking him to do something he wasn’t that interested in (namely book marketing) I asked if he might translate the book into Dutch. For context, he is Dutch, although he’s lived in the UK for 27 years and he works as a professional translator. It’s a big job, translating an eighty-thousand word book, but he plugged away at it.
In the meantime, I was scooped up by my brilliant publishers and the self-publishing plan never materialised. We’d almost forgotten about Ik Wil Je Dood and it wasn’t until I was discussing foreign rights with my publishers that I remembered we had a book ready to go. Yesterday, Ik Wil Je Dood was published on Amazon.nl and today it has hit number one in all categories and number ten in the whole of the Dutch Amazon store.
I may not be planning on working with my hubby in the future, but this joint effort looks like it might have been worthwhile! One of the things that I noticed early on in our relationship was that the Dutch don’t say please and thank you nearly as much as the Brits. Okay - we may overdo it, but apparently please and thank you are built into Dutch verbs (well, that’s what he tells me!). On this occasion, I feel it’s only right to say: dank je wel!
My next audiobook, What She Knew, is being published by Dreamscape Media on 21st July, available everywhere you can get an audiobook. It’s narrated by the brilliant Ella Lynch. I had the chance to audition the narrators for all of my audiobooks and I adored Ella’s narration. I’m sure you’ll love it as much as I do! It’s available to pre-order on Audible here.
What She Knew has had nearly 2500 reviews on Amazon, mostly four and five stars. Click here if you’d like to know what it’s about.
The Insomniac will be published on Sunday! I’m SO excited about this one as it’s received more five stars reviews from our early readers than any of my books to date. It’s available to preorder on Amazon now and I’ll give you more information soon.
Finally, if you’re in Europe, I hope you’re coping with this crazily hot weather. I’m writing about snow scenes for my next book!
Stay cool,
Miranda x
